Rifampicin is a member of the class of rifamycins that is a a semisynthetic antibiotic derived from Amycolatopsis rifamycinica (previously known as Amycolatopsis mediterranei and Streptomyces mediterranei). It has a role as an antiamoebic agent, a geroprotector, an antitubercular agent, an antineoplastic agent, a leprostatic drug, an EC 2.7.7.6 (RNA polymerase) inhibitor, a protein synthesis inhibitor, an angiogenesis inhibitor, a DNA synthesis inhibitor, a neuroprotective agent, an Escherichia coli metabolite and a pregnane X receptor agonist. It is a member of rifamycins, a hydrazone, a N-iminopiperazine, a N-methylpiperazine, a cyclic ketal and a semisynthetic derivative. It is a tautomer of a rifampicin zwitterion.
