Scytonemin is a ring assembly obtained by 1,1'-coupling of two molecules of (3E)-3-[(4-hydroxyphenyl)methylidene]cyclopenta[b]indol-2(3H)-one. A UV-screening molecule produced by many strains of cyanobacteria. It has a role as a biological pigment, an ultraviolet filter and a bacterial metabolite. It is a polyphenol, an organic heterotricyclic compound, a ring assembly, an organonitrogen heterocyclic compound and an enone.
