It is a byproduct of DDT manufacturing and is a highly persistent contaminant found in the environment and which bio-accumulates in marine species. It has a role as a persistent organic pollutant. It is a tertiary alcohol, a triarylmethane and a member of monochlorobenzenes. It is functionally related to a tris(4-chlorophenyl)methane.
