A nucleoside analogue, it is an injectable antiviral used for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in AIDS patients. It has a role as an antineoplastic agent, an antiviral drug, a photosensitizing agent and an anti-HIV agent. It is a member of phosphonic acids and a pyrimidone. It is a conjugate acid of a cidofovir(1-) and a cidofovir(2-).
