Found as a product of (+)-sesamin in rat liver homogenate and also produced from sesamin by an enzyme (SesA) found in Sinomonas species. no. 22 growing on sesamin. It has a role as a plant metabolite. It is a lignan, a member of catechols and a furofuran. It is functionally related to a (+)-sesamin monocatechol and a (+)-sesamin.
